Bishop's Ring, Sunrise and Sky Colours on April 16th, 2010

At Trier, the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano did not bring the beutiful sunsets expected by the media. Instead, large brownish aureoles around the sun with a bluish centre could be observed - the rare Bishop's rings. Bishop's rings are not neccessarily produced by volcanic ash - large amounts airborne of pollen make them, too.

The size of the aerosols transported to the troposphere by this volcanic eruption obviously was too large to produce the beautiful purple light observed after the Pinatubo and Sarychev eruptions, due to very fine volcanic aerolsols. The sunsets were all but spectacular this times and showed a characteristic yellowish or brownish hue, resembling that of Sahara dust sunsets. Under certain weather conditions these situation can occur in Europe.

The thin cloud layer also showed weak halos (pillars, fragments of the 22° halo. The volcanic ash may have provided the condensation nuclei.
