Zodiacal Light on March 7th, 2010

On March 7th, 2010, the sky was clear enough to reveal the zodiacal light only a few kilometers from Trier. The image shows it as a faint grey cone of light pointing to the Pleiades - not only the finger-like brightening belongs to it, but also the diffuse shine to the right hand side. The three brightenings near the horizon are due to artificial light sources. The zodiacal light could also be observed the following two days. An evening in spring is the best time to look for the phenomenon, because then it still far from the shine of the Milky Way, or look for it an hour before sunrise in autumn.

The zodiacal light is produced by the scattering of light by dust particles in the solar system.
