Fragment of a Circumhorizontal Arc on July 10th, 016

Circumhorizontal arcs require a solar height of at least 58 degrees above the horizon to be seen, which is only the case in summer around noon if you are situated in middle latitudes. Refraction in ice crystals, present in cirrus clouds, can produce a dazzling spectrum of colors from red to blue. In this case only a small cirrus cloud was there to show the greenish and bluish part of the spectrum. The clouds in the foreground consist of water droplets and thus appear white or grey. Circumhorizontal arcs are huge when complete.

Note the dark foreground cloud borders against the bright halo fragment.
