Parry's Arcs

William Edward Parry's  published diaries of his expeditions to the polar regions not only report observations of halos - the Parry arcs were named after him - but also observations of aurorae and cloud iridescence. The diaries contain diagrams of the halo displays after his and Captain Edward Sabine's observations. Sabine was an astronomer.

Halo display according to Parry. The halo named after Parry stretches from x to v. The upper tangent arc reaches from k to l and touches the 22° halo. The larger circle is a 46° halo or supralateral arc touching the circumzenithal arc. C and b are the parhelia lying on the parhelic circle, a is the typical brightening o f the lower tangent arc. The oblique arcs emanating from q and r are probably subhelic arcs. The letter 'y' marks the coloured contact arcs of the 46° halo.
