Dust Aureoles on Tenerife
Airborne dust particles from the barren lava rocks of the volcanic caldera of Mount Teide often scatter the sunlight and produce large aureoles. Depending on wind conditions, Sahara dust also contributes to the phenomenon. Sometimes dust devils can be observed on the ground. The sunset colours on this day, October 1st, 2011, were rather subdued.
