Light Fringes in Clear Water

The curved meniscus around any object distorting the water surface refracts and disperses the sunlight reflected by the ground. In clear water, the effect causes shadows of objects on the surface projected onto the ground to show bright fringes. Depending on solar elevation, the fringes are either whitish or show colours like those produced by a poorly corrected achromatic lens. With low sun, the floating object shows distinct colour fringes. On the sunward side, the shadow will have a red edge because the blue is overlain with red rays from other parts of the meniscus. On the other side the fringe looks mostly blue.
Depending on the depth of the water, the colours can be very bright.
