Moondog on January 19th, 2011
On the evening of January 19th, 2011, very bright and colourful moondogs could be observed at moonrise, accompagnied by a short-lived light pillar. Nikon D90, 10 seconds at f/4.8 and 400 ISO, processed with Adobe Photoshop CS5. Like parhelia, moondogs are formed by refraction of light in airborne hexagonal plate crystals. They are observed morer rarely than parhelia because the moon has to be almost full to see them clearly.
