Pollen Coronae

Pollen particles are small enough to produce diffraction coronae around bright light sources. The typical shape of the pollen has an influence on the shape of the corona which often is not quite circular and shows a characteristic number of patches. The nearly circular birch pollen coronae do not look the same as pine pollen coronae.
Pollen coronae are often faint and hardly detectable. Pollen coronae around the moon are more obvious and do not harm the eyes of the observer - always protect your eyes when observing pollen coronae around the sun! makle sure that the sun is hidden behind a building, a chimney or a branch and don’t forget your sunglasses.).

Pollen coronae around the sun on the afternoon of May 1th, 2006. The images had to be underexposed to show the subtle colours. In contrast to the coronae of May 11th, the coloured rings showed a reddish patch below and above the Sun. Fuji Finepix S2 Pro, processed with Adobe Photoshop Elements.
