Lunar Circumzenithal Arc on June 30th, 2012

Halos have become quite rare lately over here. I was going to bed, when I noticed two bright moondogs. So I got out with the camera that was readily prepared for NLCs. Not a good halo display, but who cares. I saw what I have been waiting for for 12 years – a lunar CZA. It might be much more common, but not here, here it is as rare as a Wegener arc. Theroretically, when there are two bright sundogs or moondogs, there is a good chance to catch a circumzenithal arc, too. But more than a half moon, a more or less clear sky, a band of cirrus and the moon just low enough – almost impossible. But here it is. I missed the best moment because I had difficulties pointing the camera so high, the ball head wouldn’t allow it. I had to shorten one tripod leg and hold the whole construction with my hands – and point.

Nikon D90, Nikkor 24.0-70.0 mm f/2.8, 20 seconds at f/4.0 and 800 ISO, processed with Adobe Photoshop CS5. On the left hand side, traces of a supralateral arc can be seen.
