Aureole Effect on April 24th, 2010

The aureole effect is a pespectivic phenomenon in flowing water, well visible when the sun is high in the sky and the viewpoint of the observer is elevated. The rays seem to radiate outwards from the observer's or camera's shadow marking the antisolar point. The effect is produced by waves that focus and defocus the sunlight travelling through the water. It is less evident when the water is totally clear. The scattering of suspended particles makes it evident. It does not occur in still water.
