Hoar Frost Crystals

Hoar frost is formed when water vapor from the air sublimes on a very cold surface. The permanent freezing, resubliming and refreezing can produce very large structures. The crystals shown below were as large as 40 mm and nicely show on a very large scale the hexagonal structure of water ice, based on the hexagonal atomic structure of ice. They had formed on the surface of a frozen lake. A nearby creek with open water was one of the sources of the humidity. Both frames were taken with a Nikon D80 SL equipped with a Tamron macro lens SP AF Di 90 mm/1 : 2.8.
