22° Halo

The 22° radius halo is one of the most common halos, although it is rarely seen complete.

In contrast to many other halos, the 22° halo does not change with solar elevation. An optical illusion makes it seem less circular close to the horizon. It is reddish on the inside and bluish at the outside because red light is refracted least. The 22° halo colours are rather diffuse because colours from rays passing through the hexagonal ice prisms overlap except on the innermost red rim.
